About Us

Ride Together.
Grow in Faith.

Holy Spokes is a gathering of Catholic men from Northern Colorado who believe that brotherhood is built in motion. Each month, on the second Saturday morning, we meet at a predetermined location at 7:00 AM, open with prayer, and head out together for a ride averaging around 2 hours through the roads of NoCo.

Beginners are genuinely welcome here — with one expectation: a willingness to learn and grow toward intermediate group riding. This is not a casual spin; the intent is a real workout pursued in good company. We ride with purpose, and we ride together.

Our goal is to move as a single group. Where pace differences require it, riders may organize into smaller groups — but no one rides alone. Every man finishes with the group, and every group finishes the ride.

After every ride, we gather at the tailgate for food and drink. The road is where we work — the tailgate is where we linger and build the bonds of brotherhood.

Chapel of the Madonna del Ghisallo, Magreglio, Italy

Our Patroness

La Madonna del Ghisallo

The painting enshrined in the Chapel of Magreglio above Lake Como depicts Our Lady with the infant Jesus and was discovered, according to local tradition, in a nearby forest. That shrine became a chapel, and the chapel became one of the most beloved sanctuaries in the world of cycling.

The legend reaches further back: a medieval count named Ghisallo, fleeing bandits along the mountain road, found refuge before this image of Our Lady and was saved. From that day the pass bore her name, and she was venerated as protectress of all who traveled these hills.

When the Giro d'Italia and Giro di Lombardia began routing their great races over the Ghisallo climb, cyclists the world over found in her a natural patron. A local priest, Father Ermelindo Vigano — with the support of champions Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi — brought a petition to Rome. In 1949, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Madonna del Ghisallo Patroness of Cyclists. A bronze torch, blessed by the Pope, has burned before her image ever since.

The chapel walls are hung with the jerseys of champions, bicycles from legendary races, and simple offerings from ordinary riders who climbed to give thanks.

Madonna del Ghisallo, prega per noi.
Our Lady of Ghisallo, pray for us.

What to Expect

Every Second Saturday

🙏
Opening Prayer

We begin together in prayer before every ride — commending ourselves to Jesus through His Mother, Our Lady of Ghisallo, before the first pedal stroke.

🚴
Road Ride

An approximately 2-hour road ride through NoCo, announced in advance. The goal is a genuine workout ridden together — pacing groups may form, but every rider finishes with others.

🗺️
New Route Monthly

Each month we ride a new route in Northern Colorado (in and around Fort Collins and Loveland). Meet-up location and route shared with registered riders ahead of the ride.

🍔
Tailgate & Feast

Every ride ends at the tailgate — food, drink, and fellowship. Members take turns contributing. No one rides home hungry.

Ride Well, Ride Safe

Road Etiquette, Safety & Preparedness in NoCo

Northern Colorado offers exceptional road cycling. Riding well means riding safely, respectfully, and prepared. Every member of Holy Spokes is expected to know and follow these standards.

01
Group Riding Etiquette
  • Ride single-file on busy roads; double-file only where safe and legal
  • Hold your line — no sudden swerves or braking without warning
  • Call out hazards: "hole," "gravel," "car back," "stopping"
  • Point down toward road hazards so riders behind can see
  • No overlapping wheels with the rider ahead of you
  • Maintain a consistent pace — surges drop riders
  • No headphones — you must hear traffic and fellow riders
  • Wait for dropped riders at intersections and regrouping points
02
Colorado Road Law & Safety
  • Cyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers under Colorado law
  • Ride as far right as safely practical — but take the lane when needed
  • Obey all traffic signals, signs, and lane markings — no exceptions
  • Use hand signals for turns and stops
  • A helmet is required for all rides — no exceptions
  • Front white light and rear red light for low-light conditions
  • Be predictable around motor vehicles; make eye contact when possible
  • NoCo wind can be significant — hold your line in crosswinds
03
Road Type & Terrain
  • Holy Spokes rides are road — no gravel at this time
  • Road bikes or bikes with 25mm+ road tires are recommended
  • Routes posted in advance with elevation and surface notes
  • NoCo roads range from flat plains to rolling foothills
  • Colorado weather changes fast — check the morning forecast
  • Avoid roads with no shoulder during high-traffic hours
  • Respect private property and rural communities on our routes
04
What to Bring — Every Ride
  • 2 spare inner tubes — matched to your wheel size
  • Tire levers (2–3) for removing the tire bead
  • Mini pump or CO₂ inflator (with extra cartridge)
  • Patch kit as backup to your spare tubes
  • Multi-tool with hex keys and a chain breaker
  • 2 full water bottles — altitude dehydrates fast
  • Nutrition for 2 hours: gels, bars, or food in a jersey pocket
  • ID and emergency contact info — always
  • Phone with the route downloaded offline
  • Cash or card for emergencies
05
Flat Tire Protocol
  • Signal immediately — raise your hand and call "flat"
  • Move to the right shoulder safely before stopping
  • The group pulls over and waits — no rider fixes a flat alone
  • Two riders assist; others guard the group from traffic
  • Check inside the tire for the cause before installing a new tube
  • Inflate to the PSI range printed on the tire sidewall
  • Know your repair before the ride — practice at home first
06
Spirit of the Ride
  • This is a brotherhood ride, not a race — bring your effort, leave your ego
  • Stronger riders support developing ones — no one rides alone, ever
  • Beginners are welcome; come ready to learn and push yourself
  • Pacing groups are acceptable; abandoning a rider is not
  • Pray for one another on the road — the miles are an offering
  • Represent your faith well — our riding reflects our character
  • If you see a rider in distress, stop — always
A Note on NoCo Cycling

Northern Colorado has a robust cycling community and excellent infrastructure — the Poudre Canyon corridor, Rist Canyon, US 287, and routes through the Loveland and Berthoud areas offer some of the finest road riding in the region. We are guests of the roads we ride.
